We invest in companies that are in the early stages. We are looking for investments in Norway and in the industries we understand and have good knowledge about.

Sandbox and other activities

Our investment portfolio also comprises early phase companies. These investments are made through our subsidiary Sandbox Capital AS. In 2013 we also went into an African investment fund as founding investor.

Sandbox Capital invests in early phase companies, but the philosophy is to invest in mature industries. We seek companies with a technological or strategic advantage. Investments made by Sandbox Capital comprise the four companies described below.

Det Norske Brenneri

Sandbox owns 56 per cent of Det Norske Brenneri AS, a distillery company founded in 2011, which has developed the aquavits “Arvesølvet?, “Helt Klar?, “Barents? and “Hellström?. In the first quarter of 2014 Det Norske Brenneri acquired a production company, Puntervold AS in Grimstad, and will post acquisition be a fully integrated company within Norwegian spirits and premium apple juice. The merged entity will employ 10 persons full time. The company will continue to develop spirits produced in Norway, for both the Norwegian market and for exports. Following the acquisition of Puntervold, the company expects annual sales to be around NOK 25 million.

Investment in Africa

Holta Invest has taken the role as lead investor in the investment fund Spear Africa Holdings Ltd. The fund will invest in businesses that are positioned to benefit from the continued economic growth and accelerating foreign direct investment in Sub-Saharan African countries. The fund concluded its first investment in October 2013 with the acquisition of the 49 per cent stake in Metro Commodities Ltd. Metro Commodities is a Zimbabwean based wholesale chain with 10 branches and ambitious plans for further growth.
